Most people keep diaries to remember big moments, but Sarah Manguso kept hers to preserve the tiniest of details. For twenty-five years, Manguso, who’s published seven books to nearly universal acclaim, wrote daily and fastidiously to produce a diary of more than 100,000 pages.
As the 2016 year came to a close, so did Issue #4 of Arcturus magazine. In December, our art theme reminded us of sacred landscapes and quiet alcoves. The poetry stretched from the dunes of Mars to the fields of Montana. And the prose whispered of the in-between stages of life and seasons.
Poets are the curators of history and the medium of their expression is boundless. Let’s play a game. Pick your favorite literary journal. Look at their masthead. Count how many people of color there are, how many women, how many queer people, how many people with disabilities.
